Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Delhi to Shimla, the charming hill station once known as the summer capital of British India. As you ascend into the Himalayas, you'll pass through pine forests and picturesque towns. On arrival in Shimla, check into your hotel and spend the evening exploring Mall Road, The Ridge, and admiring the colonial architecture that defines the city’s character.
After breakfast, depart for Sangla Valley in Kinnaur. The drive takes you through the apple-laden region of Narkanda and the historic town of Rampur, following the Sutlej River as it carves its way through the hills. By evening, you’ll reach Sangla, a lush and peaceful valley surrounded by snow-covered peaks. Check into your hotel or riverside campsite and enjoy the serene atmosphere.
Today, take a short drive to Chitkul, the last inhabited village on the Indo-Tibetan border. Situated at the edge of the Baspa River, Chitkul is known for its wooden homes, traditional temples, and breathtaking views. Spend time strolling through the village, soaking in its raw natural charm, and breathing in the crisp Himalayan air. Return to Sangla for an overnight stay.
Post breakfast, begin your drive to Kalpa, a quaint Himalayan village known for its panoramic views of the Kinnaur Kailash range. On the way, stop at Reckong Peo, where you can witness the intermingling of Buddhist and Hindu cultures. After arriving in Kalpa, explore the village, visit Kalpa Monastery, and enjoy the dramatic cliffside scenery from Roghi Village.
Today you venture deeper into the higher Himalayas as you make your way into Spiti Valley. En route, stop at Nako, a peaceful village known for its beautiful lake and ancient monastery. Continue your journey through the challenging but awe-inspiring Malling Nalla stretch to arrive in Tabo. Visit the thousand-year-old Tabo Monastery, often referred to as the “Ajanta of the Himalayas,” and admire its ancient murals and statues.
After breakfast, drive toward Kaza, the central town of Spiti Valley. En route, visit Dhankar Monastery, dramatically perched on a cliff offering a commanding view of the Spiti and Pin rivers. If time and energy permit, you can opt for a short trek to the sacred Dhankar Lake. By evening, reach Kaza and check into your guesthouse or hotel for a peaceful night.
Today is dedicated to exploring the high-altitude villages surrounding Kaza. Start with the Key Monastery, an iconic structure resembling a fortress, rich in Buddhist heritage. Proceed to Kibber, one of the highest motorable villages in the world, followed by Hikkim, home to the world’s highest post office. Visit Komic, one of the highest inhabited villages, and end your day in Langza, where you’ll see a massive Buddha statue and fossil-rich mountains. Return to Kaza for the night.
Post breakfast, begin your journey toward the mystical Chandratal Lake, crossing the spectacular Kunzum Pass (4,551 m) en route. The road takes you through barren landscapes and past tiny mountain hamlets. Upon reaching the Chandratal campsite, take a short hike to the lake, famed for its crescent shape and reflective, crystal-clear waters. Spend the night stargazing under the unpolluted skies.
After an early breakfast, drive toward Manali via Batal, Chatru, and Gramphu. Experience the dramatic shift in landscapes as the starkness of Spiti gives way to the lush greenery of Lahaul Valley. Depending on weather and road conditions, you’ll cross either the Atal Tunnel or Rohtang Pass before reaching Manali. Check into your hotel and relax after a thrilling day of travel.
Spend the day exploring the cultural and natural attractions of Manali. Visit the historic Hadimba Devi Temple nestled among tall deodar trees, and soak in the hot springs at Vashisht. Explore Manu Temple and the peaceful Tibetan Monastery. Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the Beas River and shop for souvenirs and local food on Mall Road. It's a day of both exploration and relaxation.
After breakfast, begin your drive back to Delhi. The road winds through mountain passes and forested valleys as you leave the Himalayas behind. Arrive in Delhi by evening, marking the end of an unforgettable Himalayan adventure filled with culture, serenity, and breathtaking views.
