Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Delhi to Shimla, the former summer capital of British India. As you leave the plains behind, you'll enter the lush green hills of Himachal Pradesh. En route, enjoy stopovers for refreshments and admire the winding roads through pine and deodar forests. Upon arrival in Shimla, check in to your hotel and relax for the evening. If time permits, take a stroll down the famous Mall Road to soak in the colonial charm of the hill station.
After breakfast, depart for the mesmerizing Sangla Valley in Kinnaur district. The drive takes you along the Sutlej River, with breathtaking views of gorges, valleys, and apple orchards. You'll pass through Narkanda, Rampur, and Karcham before entering the Baspa Valley. Sangla is a hidden gem nestled among snow-clad peaks and alpine forests. Upon arrival, check into your stay and take in the natural beauty of the valley that will be your home for the night.
This morning, head towards Chitkul, the last inhabited village on the Indo-Tibetan border, known for its raw beauty, wooden houses, and the roaring Baspa River. Spend some time in the peaceful village before continuing the journey to Kalpa, another picturesque destination in Kinnaur. Kalpa offers majestic views of the Kinner Kailash range, a sacred peak in Hindu mythology. Check-in at your hotel, and in the evening, visit Roghi village and the famous Suicide Point for awe-inspiring views.
Begin your day early and set out on a thrilling drive deeper into the Himalayas toward the high-altitude villages of Spiti. Stop at Nako, a quiet hamlet perched beside a tranquil lake surrounded by willows and poplars. Explore Nako Monastery and enjoy lunch amid the serene landscape. Later, continue towards Tabo, often referred to as the ‘Ajanta of the Himalayas’ due to its ancient monastery, which dates back over 1000 years. Upon reaching Tabo, check into your hotel and relax.
After breakfast, visit the Tabo Monastery, a UNESCO candidate site featuring priceless murals and ancient scriptures. Then drive to Dhankar Village, where the cliff-top Dhankar Monastery offers spectacular views of the Spiti and Pin river confluence. Take a short hike if you're up for it to Dhankar Lake (optional). Post-lunch, continue to Kaza, the administrative and cultural capital of Spiti Valley. Check into your stay and explore the local market in the evening.
Today is dedicated to exploring the magical villages around Kaza. Drive to Hikkim, home to the world’s highest post office, and send a postcard to loved ones. Proceed to Komic, one of the highest villages in the world with motorable access. Then, visit Langza, known for its fossil-rich soil and the towering Buddha statue overlooking the valley. Conclude the day with a visit to the serene Key Monastery, a 1000-year-old gompa and a symbol of Spitian spirituality. Return to Kaza by evening.
Today’s journey is thrilling as you cross one of the highest motorable mountain passes in Himachal, Kunzum La (4550 m), offering panoramic views of snow-capped peaks. Descend towards Chandratal Lake, also known as the Moon Lake, a high-altitude glacial lake located at 4,300 meters. A short trek of around 2 km leads you to the lake, where the changing colors of water and the surrounding peaks create a dreamlike atmosphere. Spend the night camping near the lake under the stars.
Wake up to fresh mountain air and begin your descent toward Manali. Drive through the rugged beauty of Lahaul Valley, crossing Batal, Chhatru, and Gramphu. You’ll pass through the engineering marvel Atal Tunnel, dramatically reducing travel time into Manali. En route, stop at Solang Valley, a hub of adventure activities, if time allows. Arrive in Manali by evening and check into your hotel for a well-earned rest.
After breakfast, check out and begin your return journey to Delhi. Reflect on the memories created in the high Himalayas, the monasteries, the remote villages, and the pristine natural beauty. Bid farewell to your fellow travelers as you reach Delhi by late evening, marking the end of this unforgettable Spiti Valley adventure.
